Radio host Charlamagne Tha God sparred with a caller on “The Breakfast Club” who accused him on Wednesday of being biased toward Republicans following President Donald Trump’s Tuesday congressional address.
Charlamagne did criticize Democrats on Wednesday during the “Front Page News” segment of “The Breakfast Club,” though it was for not being sufficiently “disruptive” during Trump’s speech. During the show’s “Get It Off Your Chest” segment, a caller named Dre confronted Charlamagne for not calling out the Democrats for refusing to stand during Trump’s address, even during heartfelt moments.
LISTEN:
“Hey, listen, I notice you come out very strong, right? You’re very strong when you think Republicans do something disrespectful, but when the Democrats do something disrespectful, you don’t got nothing to say,” Dre said. “I think it was very disrespectful, right, that regardless of how they feel about Trump, when they were celebrating that little boy from Texas and them police officers and family members and them people that got killed. And everyone was basically — the attention was for them — nobody stood up. You don’t think that was disrespectful?”
Dre was referencing in part how Democrats refused to stand when Trump honored a 13-year-old boy with cancer named D.J. Daniel by making him an honorary Secret Service agent during his congressional address. Trump also honored the widow of slain New York City Police Department (NYPD) officer Jonathan Diller.
Moreover, the president announced during the speech that he had signed an executive order in memory of the late Jocelyn Nungaray, a 12-year-old girl who was murdered by two illegal aliens. He said he had renamed Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge the “Jocelyn Nungaray National Refuge” while her mother, Alexis Nungaray, was in attendance.
Charlamagne at first appeared to agree with the caller.
“I think Democrats definitely should have — they definitely should have applauded that,” he said. “You can’t be so against another party that you don’t applaud basic things like that.”
He then said it was “disrespectful” to not stand before backtracking and saying he’s not sure “disrespect” is the proper word. He then asserted the Democrats did applaud but did not rise from their seats, sparking a disagreement with the caller, who said they did not stand or clap.
“Hey, you’re totally wrong because you know what’s so funny? Whenever I criticize Democrats, Democrats call in sounding like you do, and whenever I criticize Republicans, Republicans call in sounding like you do,” Charlamagne said. “And that’s why I said we can never be objective. Because if a Republican says something, Democrats automatically say it’s a lie. If Democrats say something, Republicans automatically say it’s a lie. Nobody can ever be objective and just call it down the middle.”
“Uncle Charla, it’s the way you say it, though. When you criticize Democrats, you call them stupid because they think Republican is winning and it’s getting away with stuff,” Dre said. “That’s not criticism.”
Charlamagne then accused the caller of not listening to him “enough” before the call ended.
Prior to the 2024 presidential election, the radio host said he “absolutely would endorse” former Vice President Kamala Harris just after former President Joe Biden dropped out and endorsed her on July 21. He also repeatedly defended the former vice president during the 2024 presidential campaign when callers on The Breakfast Club criticized her.
