Democrats attending President Donald Trump’s Tuesday night speech to a joint session of Congress refused to stand when Trump honored a 13-year-old boy with cancer.
Trump addressed the joint session for over an hour and a half, during which he announced that D.J. Daniel, who has been sworn in by over 900 police departments across the county, would be an honorary Secret Service agent. Trump said that Daniel had survived for six years despite being told he had less than five months to live.
WATCH:
“Since that time, D.J. and his dad have been on a quest to make his dream come true. And D.J. has been sworn in as an honorary law enforcement officer a number of times. The police love him. The police departments love him,” Trump said during the speech. “And tonight, D.J., we are going to do you the biggest honor of them all. I am asking our new Secret Service Director Sean Curran to officially make you an agent of the United States Secret Service.”
Video showed that Democrats remained seated while Republicans stood up and applauded, with some of them chanting, “D.J.” as Curran presented Daniel with credentials and received a hug from the 13-year-old.
“WOW. Welcome to the Secret Service, Agent DJ,” Republican Rep. Nancy Mace of South Carolina posted on X. “Who’s cutting onions?”
The address was marred earlier by Democratic Rep. Al Green of Texas being ejected from the House Chamber in the Capitol building after heckling Trump during the speech.
