Hegseth’s Pentagon deploys thousands more troops to US southern border

President Donald Trump’s administration is taking its mandate to clean up the southern border very seriously.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has ordered 5,050 more troops to the border, including a Stryker brigade combat team and a general support aviation battalion. This comes amid a steep decline in illegal border crossings since Trump took office. Sean Parnell, Pentagon press secretary, said the order to send in additional manpower is an attempt to “bolster military support in securing the U.S. – Mexico border.”

They will arrive over the course of the next couple of weeks to ensure security across the nearly 2,000 miles of southern border. It also compounds Trump’s orders from immediately after his inauguration when he declared a national emergency at the border and took action to ship illegal immigrants out of the United States while also making it more difficult for them to return after they’ve been successfully deported.

In January, the president ordered 1,600 Marines to join the nearly 2,500 service members at the border who had been sent there by former President Joe Biden’s administration.

This newest deployment would bump the total number of servicemen patrolling the border up to a little under 10,000.
