Republican Georgia Rep. Buddy Carter is calling on Georgia’s two Democratic senators to support legislation keeping biological males out of girls’ and women’s sports.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune has decided to bring the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act to a vote, SiriusXM’s Megyn Kelly scooped Wednesday. Every GOP senator is expected to vote for the legislation, but the bill will need at least seven Democrats’ support to guarantee its passage due to the upper chamber’s 60-vote legislative threshold.
Carter is urging Ossoff and Warnock to back the legislation and help get the women’s sports bill to President Donald Trump’s desk, according to an exclusive statement given to the Daily Caller News Foundation. The bill passed the House largely along party lines, with 206 Democratic lawmakers voting “no” on the legislation in January.

“All women and girls deserve a fair opportunity to achieve athletic excellence,” Carter told the DCNF. “I am calling on Senators Warnock and Ossoff to stand with the people of Georgia and protect female athletes by supporting the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act.”
The legislation would prohibit biological male athletes from participating in scholastic athletic events designated specifically for female athletes, according to the bill text.
Georgia residents appear to overwhelmingly back legislation that would restrict biological males from participating in girls’ and women’s sports, according to recent polling.
Approximately 73% of likely Georgia general election voters believe Georgia should ban biological males from participating in girls’ sports, according to a January poll by the Tyson Group that surveyed 600 Georgia residents.
Nearly 80% of Americans oppose biological males competing in women’s sports, according to a New York Times-Ipsos survey conducted between Jan. 2 and Jan. 10.
Nearly 70% of Democrats or participants who “lean Democrat” told the Times they opposed transgender athletes competing in women’s sports.
Republican Alabama Sen. Tommy Tuberville is sponsoring the legislation and publicly lobbied Thune to bring the bill to the floor.
Thune’s office told the DCNF that the majority leader will file cloture on the bill Thursday, and a procedural vote on the legislation is expected to be held as soon as Monday.
Ossoff is widely viewed as one of the most vulnerable Democratic incumbents running for reelection in 2026. Trump trounced 2024 Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris in Georgia, and Ossoff is likely to face a strong Republican candidate in the general election contest.
