Judge halts Trump admin’s order to fire 11 intelligence officers in charge of DEI

A federal judge is once again trying to undermine President Donald Trump’s authority, this time by halting the firing of 11 CIA employees.

The workers are said to have been linked to DEI programs within the agency, something that Trump and his administration have been attempting to pare down since his first few hours back in office. But on Thursday, U.S. District Judge Anthony Trenga ordered delays in the firing of the employees for at least the next five days. This was the result of a lawsuit filed by former CIA officer Kevin Carroll who is representing the workers. He explained that they were merely on temporary assignments regarding the DEI initiatives, and noted that none of them had actually received a negative review regarding their work performance.

The judge’s delay allows more time for him to hear arguments, including Carroll’s assertion that “These people are being fired just because of an assumption that’s been made that they are leftists.”

The DEI employees are among the 51 total CIA employees who were placed on leave following Trump’s takeover and had their ID cards “seized” according to Carroll. According to documents reviewed by Reuters, they were all given three options and were told to pick one by the end of business day on Wednesday. Those options are:

  • Retirement by Oct. 1
  • Resignation effective on Tuesday
  • Termination on May 20
