As global tensions simmer, veteran political analyst Brit Hume said Monday on Fox News that he believes President Donald Trump has taken a commanding role in shaping NATO’s approach to defense spending and European security dynamics.
U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer said he is prepared to deploy troops in Ukraine as part of a peace deal to ensure lasting security and deter future aggression from Russian President Vladimir Putin. During an appearance on “Special Report with Bret Baier,” Hume said Trump is able to steer international discourse toward the U.S.’s demand for greater defense equity among NATO members.
“He must have been encouraged today about what the Secretary General of NATO, Mark Ruda, said about the U.S. position on this, which was that it was entirely fair,” Hume said when Baier asked if Trump was driving the policy decisions regarding Ukraine. “The U.S. had a right to complain that Europe doesn’t pay its full freight and have a strong enough military to deal with the challenges that are now facing that continent. So I think the president appears, at least, to have got something started here.”
Hume said he sees a flurry of diplomatic activity, with French President Emmanuel Macron reportedly scheduling an urgent visit to Washington.
“He’s got something going here. He’s got Macron going to rush to Washington to seek reassurance or something. This is going to make a lot of news in the next few weeks, Bret, I think it’s pretty clear,” Hume added.
Hume also commented on Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince expressing a desire to mediate.
“I think he’d like very much to bring his country into the world mainstream. And one can hope that this is a sign that he might also be willing, when the dust settles over Gaza, to move forward with the hope for an agreement with and normalization of relations with Israel. That would be quite a remarkable breakthrough if that were to happen,” Hume said.
Trump said that discussions to halt the Ukraine-Russia conflict have started after his conversation with Putin. Trump confirmed via a Truth Social post that Putin consented to initiate talks concerning Ukraine, with plans to promptly update Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, amid ongoing U.S. financial support exceeding $130 billion since the conflict’s inception in February 2022.
Zelenskyy said he’s willing to consider a peace agreement, following Trump’s proposal that Ukraine provide the U.S. with rare earth elements and other minerals in return for assistance. Throughout his campaign, Trump committed to fostering peace in Ukraine and globally.
