A Pennsylvania voter named Jackie explained Friday how she went from reluctantly voting for President Donald Trump in 2016 to enthusiastically supporting him in 2024.
Trump won Pennsylvania in both 2016 and 2024, but lost the crucial commonwealth in 2020. Jackie told journalist Mark Halperin on “The Morning Meeting” that she voted for Trump in 2016 because she “couldn’t vote” for former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, but that she was happy to support him in 2024 after experiencing former President Joe Biden’s administration and witnessing Trump’s resilience.

“I sat the presidential out in ’20 … Hey, but you know what? I actually love him now,” Jackie said. “Like, it was, ‘I’m gonna hold my nose and vote for him.’ And after the last four years … I like everything about him.”
Halperin asked if she had ever voted for former Presidents Bill Clinton or Barack Obama. She said she never voted for Clinton, but did vote for Obama once.
“You say you love Donald Trump now. What would you list as the reasons for that?” Halperin followed up.
“His perseverance. I just didn’t realize the whole — the guy never gives up,” Jackie said. “I admire that. I admire that.”
Despite facing four criminal cases during the 2024 presidential campaign and near assassination, Trump decisively defeated former Vice President Kamala Harris. Like Jackie, MSNBC contributor Sam Stein credited Trump in December for his “perseverance,” saying it sets him apart from other politicians who would typically crumble under such pressure.
“I think the real lesson from all this is that, you know, say what you will about Donald Trump, but he has one attribute that distinguishes him from anyone else in politics, which is an insatiable perseverance,” Stein said. “He will just grind through stuff that, more often than not, other politicians will succumb to. And he can figure it out, he will just claw his way back in and he will fight it. And then he’ll turn it into his advantage. And he did martyr himself by the trials.”
