NewsNation host Chris Cuomo said during a Tuesday podcast that Democrats fundamentally err by attempting to copy President Donald Trump’s strategy of using “obnoxious” rhetoric.
Comedian Adam Carolla, on “The Chris Cuomo Project,” said Democrats damage themselves by opposing everything Trump supports. Cuomo agreed, adding that they represent “the establishment,” but Trump does not, allowing him to evade reputational harm for his rhetoric while Democrats appear hypocritical when they strive to mimic him.

“The fundamental mistake Democrats make is they try to match Trump’s tactics, but there’s only one Trump. Only one person can get away with saying obnoxious shit that you’re not supposed to say because he represents something different. Everybody else is being judged as a function of the establishment,” Cuomo said. “And they hate the establishment. He isn’t. So he can say to you, ‘Ah, that Carolla, you disagreed with me last week. He’s a bum, that guy’s a mutt.’ And then he likes what you say and he says, ‘Yeah, I’m going to help Carolla with this because he’s a good guy. He said the right thing.’”
“Ordinarily, you’d be like, ‘Wait a minute, no, let’s not forget what you said before.’ It’s different with Trump,” he continued. “But when the Democrats try to play it like that, they just come off as straight hypocrites and they get frustrated that Trump doesn’t get treated that way because they haven’t realized he represents something they don’t.”
Democrats’ rhetoric recently came under fire after defense secretary nominee Pete Hegseth’s confirmation hearing, with some pundits saying their questioning of him backfired.
Cuomo himself criticized Democratic Virginia Sen. Tim Kaine for using his time during the hearing to grill Hegseth over his past marriage. Kaine suggested that the nominee’s alleged infidelity indicates he would not be steadfast to the oath of office he would take as secretary of defense.
“So because of his marriage, he can’t be trusted with the oath of office? Two points of disgust: How many people on that committee, how many in Congress, could pass the Kaine test that you can’t honor an oath to serve if you’ve ever been unfaithful? Kaine may be sitting in that room alone,” the NewsNation host said. “Who cares when we are talking about being the top warrior, not our pastor?”
