Jersey mayor suggests a reverse congestion pricing toll to get New York to come to the table and talk

One New Jersey mayor has an interesting idea for combating New York’s implementation of a congestion pricing toll.

New York’s controversial congestion pricing toll effectively works as a punishment for those attempting to enter busy areas of Manhattan. The idea is to reduce congestion and strong-arm people into using public transportation such as subways, but Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop believes he has a better idea.

Fulop, who is currently running for governor in New Jersey, suggested the implementation of a reverse congestion pricing toll.

“New Jersey has the same opportunity to push the buttons that New York is pushing against us,” he explained to Fox 5 New York. “We could do that to them, but the goal is to get to a table to have a reasonable solution.”

“There’s plenty of crossings between Staten Island, New York, Bergen County, Hudson County into New Jersey,” the mayor continued. “There’s plenty of opportunities to have the same sort of impact fee that New York is putting on New Jersey.”

The money, he says, could be used to maintain New Jersey’s transit system which often suffers from delays and cancellations. This unreliability makes it less likely for the public to use it, creating more traffic as people opt to use their own vehicles for travel.

“My view is that New Jersey Transit is a terrible product, and it should be invested in more, and until you get a reliable transportation system in New Jersey, you can’t responsibly think that people are going to take the trains,” he said. “But this was an opportunity to get hundreds of millions of dollars into New Jersey Transit, and I think the governor just took a very easy political approach.”

The details of the proposal are still unclear, and it’s not certain whether New Jersey residents will have to pay the toll to return to their home state, which many New Yorkers must do under the congestion pricing toll.
