Trump goes all the way to SCOTUS for emergency block of criminal sentencing

President-elect Donald Trump is set to be inaugurated in less than two weeks, and he’s turning to the Supreme Court to help him block the sentencing in his criminal case.

New York’s pursuit of felony charges against Trump is a shock by itself, given their leniency on violent crimes and career criminals, but pursuing sentencing against an elected president is unprecedented. He is expected to face sentencing on Friday for the 34 felony counts after being found guilty of falsifying business records, but the president-elect is asking the Supreme Court of the United States to step in.

In an emergency filing, he’s asked for a stay on sentencing until “his appeals implicating presidential immunity are resolved,” according to The Hill.

“This Court should enter an immediate stay of further proceedings in the New York trial court to prevent grave injustice and harm to the institution of the Presidency and the operations of the federal government,” Trump’s attorneys said in the filing.
