President-elect Donald J. Trump again expressed support for the U.S. buying Greenland, calling it “an incredible place” and suggesting that there is local support from residents for the idea.
On Monday, the soon to be 47th president confirmed that his son Donald J. Trump Jr. would be paying a visit to the Danish territory, the world’s largest island which is located between the Atlantic and Arctic oceans and is of great strategic value to U.S. national security interests in the Arctic region.

“I am hearing that the people of Greenland are ‘MAGA.’ My son, Don Jr, and various representatives, will be traveling there to visit some of the most magnificent areas and sights. Greenland is an incredible place, and the people will benefit tremendously if, and when, it becomes part of our Nation. We will protect it, and cherish it, from a very vicious outside World. MAKE GREENLAND GREAT AGAIN!” Trump wrote in a post to Truth Social.
The president-elect also shared a video of a man said to be a Greenland resident who expressed his support for Trump and the U.S. to take the territory off of Denmark’s hands.

The video was shared by Trump on Truth Social, where the president-elect vowed to protect and cherish Greenland “when it becomes part of” the United States.

“If you could tell Trump anything, what would it be?” asks a woman in the video, with the man donning a read “Make America Great Again” ballcap and urging the newly elected leader to “Buy us. Buy Greenland.”
The man added that he “loved Americans” and that Greenlanders want to be free from Denmark.
“We don’t want to be colonized by Danish government anymore,” he said. “We get ripped [off] every year [with] our minerals from Greenland. We are the richest nation in the world. And we don’t get to use it. Denmark’s using us too much.”
Don Jr. is not expected to be meeting with Greenland officials during his trip which is being undertaken in a personal capacity.
The incoming president’s post comes two weeks after he floated the idea of the U.S. purchasing Greenland.
“[F]or purposes of National Security and Freedom throughout the World, the United States of America feels that the ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity,” he wrote on Truth Social last month.
He had previously suggested that the U.S. could buy the large, sparsely populated island, likening it to a “a large real estate deal” in 2019.
“A lot of things can be done. It’s hurting Denmark very badly because they’re losing almost $700 million a year carrying it,” Trump said. “So, they carry it at great loss, and strategically for the United States, it would be nice. And, we’re a big ally of Denmark and we help Denmark, and we protect Denmark.”
“Greenland belongs to the people of Greenland,” Greenland’s Prime Minister Múte Egede said last month, according to the BBC. “We are not for sale and will never be for sale.”
