“The View” co-host Sunny Hostin invoked the Holocaust and World War II during a Monday segment as she labeled January 6, 2021 as one of the “worst days in American history.”
Hostin argued that the U.S. cannot move on from an “atrocity” such as the Capitol riot that took place four years ago, and stated that the country will face consequences if they forget “worst moments” in American history. The co-host accused those who believe the country should move on of losing their “moral clarity.”
“I think we need to find moral clarity, you know, in this country,” Hostin said. “And I just remember, after January 6, you had someone like Mitch McConnell placing the blame on January 6 where it belonged, squarely on Donald Trump’s shoulders. And then, you started seeing people backtrack that and losing their moral center. You had Condoleeza Rice I believe on this very show saying, ‘You know what, we need to move on from January 6.’ I say no, you don’t move on because January 6 was an atrocity. It was one of the worst moments in American history. And, when you think about the worst moments in American history, like World War II, things that happened like the Holocaust, chattel slavery, we need to never forget because [the] past becomes prologue if you forget any race.”

The Holocaust, carried out by the Nazis in Europe, killed tens of millions of individuals, including six million Jews. Roughly 20 million military personnel and 40 million civilians died during World War II. During the Capitol riot, one supporter of President-elect Donald Trump named Ashli Babbitt died after being shot by Lt. Michael Byrd as she attempted to crawl through a barricaded section of the building outside the Speaker’s lobby.
Former Capitol police officer Brian Sicknick died of natural causes after suffering from two strokes following the riot. Initial reports alleged that Sicknick succumbed to injuries from being hit in the head with a fire extinguisher, though an autopsy later found no evidence that he suffered internal or external injuries from rioters.
A majority of voters did not appear to care much about the riot ahead of the 2024 election, with just 37% of voters believing Trump was responsible for the events of that day by December 2023, CNN senior data reporter Harry Enten said Monday.
