Gender studies professor reacts to University of Iowa closing gender department: ‘Disappointing’

The University of Iowa is working to scale back its DEI landscape, and that includes closing down some departments that aren’t raking in student interest.

In a press release from December 17, the University explained its decision to cut the department, offering a new major instead for the few students who were taking the courses.

“Under the proposed plan, the college would close the departments of American Studies and Gender, Women’s, and Sexuality Studies, as well as the current majors in American Studies and in Social Justice, which have fewer than 60 students combined, and create a new major in Social and Cultural Analysis,” the school announced.

The move comes after Iowa’s state Board of Regents approved a massive scaleback of DEI initiatives across the entire state, which is good news for conservatives who have long decried the measures.

One person who wasn’t happy about this was a professor who actually taught in this department.

Professor Lina-Maria Murillo claims she’s actually seen a “spike in interest” in such courses and says it’s “sad” that the University of Iowa is moving away from them.

While this may be a solemn moment for Murillo, X users are celebrating:
