The holiday festivities of German revelers turned to horror when a car allegedly driven by a Saudi doctor plowed through the crowd at a Christmas market in Magdeburg, leaving carnage in its wake.
At least two people were killed and dozens more injured on Friday when a dark-colored BMW driven by the individual sped through revelers at the holiday gathering with the horrifying incident being caught on graphic security camera video, a heinous act that officials are calling a terror attack.
The incident took place just after 7 p.m. local time when the speeding vehicle mowed through hundreds of people who were shopping and enjoying themselves heading into the Christmas weekend in what authorities say was a deliberate act.
More than 65 people were injured, 14 of them severely, according to Magdeburg spokesperson Michael Reif, The New York Times reported. An adult and a small child were killed according to initial reports but Reuters has now put the death toll at four.

The driver was subdued and arrested by police after barreling through the revelers and has been identified as a 50-year-old Saudi doctor who first came to Germany in 2006.
“As things stand, he is a lone perpetrator,” said German state premier, Reiner Haseloff. “So that as far as we know there is no further danger to the city.”
Haseloff, who was on his way to Magdeburg, described the deadly incident as “a terrible event, particularly now in the days before Christmas”.
It was initially reported that the suspect was also in possession of an explosive device although it’s unclear whether that is the case.
“Every human life lost in this attack is a terrible tragedy and one human life too many,” Haseloff told reporters.
“My thoughts are with the victims and their families,” said German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in a post to X. “We stand by their side and by the side of the people of Magdeburg. My thanks go to the dedicated rescue workers in these anxious hours.”
“We are horrified by the attack today in Magdeburg, Germany. We send our condolences to those affected and stand by our friend and Ally Germany,” State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said in a statement on X.

“The shocking act in Magdeburg a few days before Christmas hits us in the heart. We continue to fear for the lives of the seriously injured and mourn the people who were torn from life by this terrible act,” said Germany’s interior minister Nancy Faeser in a statement.
“Before leaving his post in November, the head of Germany’s domestic intelligence agency, Thomas Haldenwang, warned that the country’s threat level was higher because of the war in Middle East,” the New York Times reported. “’The danger is real and more acute than it has been in a long time,’ he said at the time.”
Authorities are investigating the motives of the suspect which are currently unclear.
“The Kingdom affirms its position in rejecting violence and expresses its sympathy and sincere condolences to the families of the deceased and to the Federal Republic of Germany, government and people, with its wishes for a speedy recovery for the injured,” Saudi Arabia’s foreign ministry said in a statement condemning the attack.
