Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) is facing opposition from her own party as she seeks to become the top Democrat on the powerful House Oversight Committee but she may have a surprising advocate in her corner.
The socialist diva is competing against Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-VA) for the position which would give her a high-profile launching pad for a potential 2028 White House bid, although she’s facing stiff headwinds after an influential Democrat caucus just endorsed her opponent.
On Sunday’s edition of “Fox News Live,” Republican Oversight Committee Chairman Rep. James Comer (R-KY) explained to co-anchor Arthel Neville why AOC could be a vast improvement over the outgoing Democrat ranking member, Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) who’s replacing Jerry Nadler on the Judiciary Committee.

“Of course, you are a member of the House Oversight and Accountability Committee. The Chair. In fact, you’re also a member of the AOC fan Club, I understand, and besides believing that you will have a good working relationship, what leadership qualities would make Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez an effective oversight Ranking member?” Neville asked.
“I think that if you look at the current leadership with the oversight committee on the Democrat side, they’ve had Jamie Raskin leading them. So the Democrats have nowhere to go but up,” Comer responded. “Jamie Raskin has been wrong.”
Neville then asked, “So then how will AOC make you go up — or make the Democrats go up?”
“Yeah, well, she’s better spoken. Look, I think that, you know, the Democrats are turning on AOC. My endorsement of AOC is probably hurting her, which… I think is amusing,” Comer answered. “They’re wanting to go back to another boring old guy like Gerry Connolly.”
“But look, AOC is, you know, I think she represents a big segment of the Democratic Party that believes in socialism, that believes in the Green New Deal, that believes in Wokeism. So, if the Democrats want a real Democrat to lead the oversight committee on their side, I think AOC is perfect for them,” the Oversight boss added, noting that Ocasio-Cortez has become the ideological thought leader for the party since she exploded onto the scene six years ago.
“What about her leadership qualities?” Neville asked.
“Well, look, you know, I mean, lucky for her, she’s in the minority, so she doesn’t really have to display a lot of leadership qualities,” Comer responded. “All they’re going to do is try to complain and obstruct and do things like that. But I think AOC is the best they got, if that tells you anything about the Democrats on the Oversight Committee. I think AOC is the best they got.”
Ocasio-Cortez’s path to the top Dem Oversight spot will have to overcome the speed bump of the New Democrat Coalition which boasts around 100 members and just threw its support behind Connolly, who may not be the drama queen that AOC is but has still demonstrated a tendency for grandstanding, declaring that the “Ukrainian-Russian border is our border!” from the floor of the House this year.
AOC is also reportedly facing opposition from former Speaker Nancy Pelosi – at least before she fell and broke her hip in Europe.
“She’s a lot nicer than Jamie Raskin, and she’s pleasant to be around. So, yeah, again, they have nowhere to go but up after Jamie Raskin,” Comer said.
