Former Republican Illinois Rep. Joe Walsh admitted Monday on a show that President Joe Biden’s pardon of his son makes it tougher to convince middle-ground voters that President-elect Donald Trump is a “unique threat.”
Biden released a statement Sunday evening announcing that he pardoned his son, Hunter Biden, of his three felony gun charges, despite him and his staffers repeatedly denying that he would. On “Piers Morgan Uncensored,” Morgan questioned the anti-Trump Republican about his thoughts on Biden’s decision, highlighting how the president’s move could give Republicans a motive to push for Trump to pardon those jailed for the events of Jan. 6.
“What it did, Pierce, was it made all the bad stuff that Trump’s going to do that much more acceptable to most Americans. I’m not talking about the far right. They’ll follow Trump off the cliff,” Walsh said.

“I’m not talking about the far left who liked the fact that Joe Biden pardoned his son. I’m talking about all the Americans in the middle who I’ve been trying to convince that Trump’s a unique threat,” Walsh added. “Well, when he pardons the January 6 rioters, it will be just that much more acceptable to them because of what Joe Biden did last.”
The president claimed that his reasoning for pardoning Hunter was due to the “raw politics” infecting the justice system, alleging that Hunter’s cases were “singled out” because of his relation to the president. While some pundits have supported the decision, claiming no one would care if it weren’t Biden’s son, others have criticized the president, saying Biden’s legacy will be remembered as a “complete and total disgrace.”
Throughout his campaign, Trump promised on multiple occasions that he would pardon “many” of the Jan. 6 defendants, saying in July that he would “absolutely” pardon those who are innocent, as they were convicted “by a very tough system.” Since his presidential win, several Jan. 6 defendants have asked to delay or pause their cases, citing Trump’s promise of a pardon.
