New bodycam footage shows witnesses defend Daniel Penny’s actions on NYC subway

New bodycam footage from the day Daniel Penny protected subway passengers sheds light on how bystanders viewed his actions.

Penny, a Marine veteran, is currently on trial for manslaughter stemming from an altercation with homeless New York City man Jordan Neely.

Neely reportedly frightened straphangers as witnesses claim they were “scared s**tless” by his behavior, which allegedly included threatening and lunging at them.

Now, bodycam shows the moment police gathered information from those who had been on the train:

“The whole train was freaked out he was either gonna pull a gun, a knife…” one woman said, while another quoted Neely as reportedly saying “I’m willing to die” multiple times.

The first woman chimed back in to say that Penny, whom she identified as “the guy in the tan,” took Neely down “really respectfully.”

“He just like held him down, he didn’t choke him,” both women confirmed.

The second woman would later go into detail, describing Penny’s actions as “a chokehold, not a hard chokehold, just enough to secure him. And the guy [Neely] fought, and he [Penny] kept holding him.”

She mused that Neely may have been on drugs at the time of the incident, as his behavior was “off the charts. He scared the living daylights out of everyone.”

X users say Penny never should have been charged in this case and many people view him as a “hero.”
