Literal terrorists are attending UN climate summit this year

The Taliban are attending the 2024 U.N. Climate Change Conference, also known as COP29, in Azerbaijan, The Associated Press reported Sunday.

Representatives from the Taliban will join attendees from all over the world in Baku, Azerbaijan, for the proceedings, marking the first time that the group is sending delegates to the U.N.’s climate confab since it took power over Afghanistan after the U.S. withdrew from the country in 2021, the AP reported. The Taliban’s delegation will look to enhance its cooperation on climate issues with other countries and highlight the country’s needs concerning securing financing for climate and green energy initiatives.

The Taliban, which fought against the U.S. and Western allies for 20 years following the Sept. 11 attacks in New York, is not currently recognized by most other nations as the legitimate government of Afghanistan despite their de facto control of the country, according to the AP. The National Environmental Protection Agency, a government entity under the Taliban regime, announced that it had sent several individuals to Baku to participate.

Major points of discussion at COP29 are expected to include so-called “climate finance” arrangements for developing countries to be able to pay for green energy initiatives and projects, according to CBS News. However, Trump’s return to the presidency has cast an air of uncertainty over the proceedings in Baku, as Trump has pledged to pull out of the U.N.’s Paris Climate Accords for a second time.

John Podesta, one of the top climate officials for the Biden-Harris administration, gave a Monday speech at the conference in which he stated that the U.S. will stay involved in the global climate change fight, despite the chances that President-elect Donald Trump will restrict or terminate climate policies and initiatives, according to Bloomberg News. Failed 2024 presidential candidate Kamala Harris represented the U.S. at last year’s U.N. climate summit held in Qatar, and American government officials like Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm and Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack are joining Podesta at this year’s events.
