Former MSNBC host Chris Matthews on Wednesday criticized Democrats for their “open border” policy following Vice President Kamala Harris’ loss to former President Donald Trump.
Trump clinched the required 270 electoral votes early Wednesday, winning Georgia, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania, according to multiple forecasters. Matthews, on “Morning Joe,” argued that Democrats’ lenient immigration policies contributed significantly to Harris’ defeat.

“Immigration has been a terrible decision for Democrats. I don’t know who they think they were playing to when they let millions of people come cruising through the border at their own will because of their own decisions, they came running through the border and they didn’t do a thing about it,” Matthews said. “And a lot of people are very angry about that, working people especially. They feel that they’ve been betrayed, they feel that their country has been given away, and they don’t like it.”
“And I don’t know who liked it. The Hispanics apparently didn’t like it, they want the law enforced. And so I’m not sure they were playing to anything smart here in terms of an open border and that’s what it is, an open border,” he continued. “And I think it’s a bad decision. I hope they learn from it.”
The Biden-Harris administration undertook 296 executive orders on immigration during their first year in office, with 89 of them specifically reversing or starting to undo Trump’s immigration policies. The administration also undid numerous major Trump initiatives pertaining to border security, like ending border wall construction and terminating the Remain in Mexico program.
The number of illegal border crossings reached record highs in fiscal years 2023 and 2024, according to data tracked by Customs and Border Protection.
Over 50% of Hispanic Americans supported “a new national program to deport all undocumented immigrants currently living in the U.S. illegally,” according to a CBS/YouGov poll conducted from June 5-7.
