‘You do not understand regular people’s concerns’: GOP candidate blasts former Biden official opponent during debate

Daily Caller News Foundation

Republican congressional candidate Lily Tang Williams of New Hampshire lit into Democratic congressional candidate Maggie Goodlander during a Friday debate, WMUR reported.

Williams and Goodlander had sharp exchanges during the forum over the economy after the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that only 12,000 jobs were created in October earlier Friday. Williams called out Goodlander over her net worth, noting that the Democratic nominee had portrayed herself as a renter in a previous campaign pitch.

“You’re worth $20 million or $30 million,” Williams said. “How did you know about regular people’s suffering? Do you go shopping, go to warm up, buy food? I talked to those people.”

“And you pretend to be a renter in Nashua moving back a few months ago to run for this open seat with millions of dollars from Washington, D.C. insiders, and the millions, millions of dollars,” Williams continued. “I don’t have money to run TV ads. You’re pretending to be poor, complaining rent is so high, you couldn’t save that apartment for other people to rent in Nashua, just go back to your $2 million home import business. Please don’t say that because you do not understand regular people’s concerns.”

Goodlander, a former White House aid and Department of Justice official under President Joe Biden, is married to Jake Sullivan, who currently serves as the president’s national security adviser.

Since Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris took office in January 2021, prices rose by over 20%, while the Consumer Price Index (CPI) reached a high of 9% in June 2022. By comparison, the CPI grew 1.4% year-over-year in January 2021, when Trump left office, while the average price for a gallon of gas was under $2.25, according to GasBuddy.com.

Biden’s approval rating on the economy was only 39.8% in the RealClearPolling average, while only 36% gave him good marks on inflation and only 34.8% approved of his handling of immigration, all of which have been issues emphasized by former President Donald Trump in the campaign.

Harris trails Trump by 0.3% in the RealClearPolling average of polls from Oct. 11 to Nov. 1, with the two deadlocked when Green Party candidate Dr. Jill Stein, independent candidate Cornel West and Libertarian candidate Chase Oliver are included in surveys.
