Harris camp sends mixed signals in ads targeting Jewish, Arab-American voters

Like a chameleon, Vice President Kamala Harris has seemingly been completely changing her message to voters based on whether they’re a Jew or Muslim.

“Ads running in Pennsylvania, where undecided Jewish voters could factor into the state’s outcome, highlight how she will ‘stand up for Israel’s right to defend itself,'” according to CNN’s Andrew Kaczynski.

“Meanwhile, ads targeted in Michigan, with its large Arab American population, highlight how ‘she will not be silent about the human suffering occurring in Gaza,'” Kaczynski’s reporting continues.

How very much like a chameleon of Harris …

Kaczynski calls this arguably deceptive behavior “microtargeting.”

The ads in Pennsylvania include a clip of Harris speaking out at the Democrat National Committee in Israel’s defense.

“And let me be clear, I will always stand up for Israel’s right to defend itself,” she says in the ads. “And I will always ensure Israel has the ability to defend itself, because the people of Israel must never again face the horror that a terrorist organization called Hamas caused on October 7, including unspeakable sexual violence and the massacre of young people at a music festival.”

“And know this: I will never hesitate to take whatever action is necessary to defend our forces and our interests against Iran and Iran-backed terrorists,” she adds.

Here’s the catch: Missing from the ads are two additional paragraphs in between the paragraphs seen above. What’s contained in these paragraphs? Remarks about the “suffering” in Gaza.

Meanwhile, the ads in Michigan contain snippets from other speeches she’s made in which she’s spoken about Gaza.

“What has happened in Gaza over the past nine months is devastating,” she says in the ads. “Our common humanity compels us to act.”

Harris’ supporters say she’s trying to perform a balancing act so as to simultaneously appease two very different subsets of the Democrat Party.

“That explains a lot of the problems Kamala Harris has been having in trying to define a clear position on what she would do on Gaza, because she wants to make sure that she’s balancing between the different parts of her party,” Arab Gulf States Institute president Douglas Silliman said during a discussion hosted by The National.

What makes things especially difficult for Harris is that the Biden-Harris administration that she helps lead has mostly offered unconditional support to Israel. This has made her and President Joe Biden a pariah to some pro-Palestinian activists.

Sen. Bernie Sanders recently tried to assuage the concerns of pro-Palestinian activists by arguing that former President Donald Trump’s policies would be even more favorable to Israel. He wasn’t wrong.

“I understand that there are millions of Americans who disagree with President Biden and Vice President Harris on the terrible war in Gaza,” he said in the clip above. “I am one of them. … Even on this issue, Donald Trump and his right-wing friends are worse.”

This Israel/Gaza issue is especially important because it could make or break either Harris or Trump. Harris in particular faces the prospect of Muslim voters ditching her over the Biden-Harris administration’s support for Israel. Trump, meanwhile, has been busy courting Muslim voters and promising them peace if he wins.

“Donald Trump met with Arab American supporters Friday afternoon at a halal cafe in Dearborn, vowing to bring peace to the Middle East if he’s elected,” according to The Detroit Press.

“You’re going to have peace in the Middle East [when I’m president], not with the clowns that you have running the U.S. right now,” Trump reportedly said at the cafe.

“They should have peace in the Middle East, but not with the clowns you have. You have people in the Middle East who aren’t doing their job. You have people in the U.S. who aren’t doing their job,” he added.
