Fox News host Harris Faulkner expressed confusion Friday when a former Democratic lawmaker claimed the economy was in better shape than it was four years ago.
The economy added only 12,000 jobs in October, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Friday, while also making downward revisions to job gains in August and September that totaled over 100,000. Faulkner asked former Democratic State Sen. David Carlucci of New York why Vice President Kamala Harris wasn’t acknowledging the pain Americans felt.
“We do have to talk about this, and I’m wondering why the vice president isn’t talking about this. Because I have to think they know before we do,” Faulkner said. “And so getting ahead of this with a more juicy message on I feel your pain, she’s got Bill Clinton, goodness gracious, take him with you. I mean, don’t let him talk about the border, though, because that’s gonna be a problem for Kamala Harris. But seriously, what’s going on in the last few days? That’s not what we’re seeing.”
WATCH:
Since President Joe Biden and Harris took office in January 2021, prices have risen by over 20%, while the consumer price index (CPI) peaked at 9% in June 2022. By comparison, the CPI grew by just 1.4% year-over-year in January 2021 when Trump left office, while the average price for a gallon of gas was under $2.25, according to GasBuddy.com.
“I think this is a winning issue for Kamala Harris,” Carlucci claimed, with Faulkner rebutting, “But she’s not leading in any of these polls.”
Carlucci claimed Harris was “neck-and-neck” with former President Donald Trump in terms of the economy, to which Faulkner responded, “Wait, 53 to 45, you think is neck-and-neck?”
“These are closer than what many people would have said if you only listen to one side and the rallies that Donald Trump does. He acts like the economy is in the toilet, but that’s just not true,” Carlucci claimed. “Yes, people are struggling, and Kamala Harris knows that and says that, but you’ve got to take it in its entirety. If we look at where we were four years ago, economists were saying we were headed towards a recession, possibly a depression.”
“Where we were four years ago was heading into 9% inflation, 9% inflation,” Faulkner responded. “So exactly four years ago, around the time of the election, what was being handed was 1.4%. So I’m confused. I don’t think you want to go back four years, ’cause that’s an easy conversation to have.”
Biden’s approval rating on the economy is only 39.8% in the RealClear Polling average, while only 36% gave him good marks on inflation and only 34.8% approved of his handling of immigration, all of which have been issues emphasized by former President Donald Trump in the campaign against Harris.
