MSNBC host Andrea Mitchell is ending her program, “Andrea Mitchell Reports,” after a new president is inaugurated in January, she announced Tuesday.
Mitchell requested from NBC and MSNBC to participate in more on-the-ground reporting like she had done throughout her career and travel globally to places such as Ukraine, Russia, and Cuba once a new president is inaugurated in January, she said at the end of her program. She will remain the chief foreign affairs correspondent and chief Washington correspondent at NBC News and MSNBC.
“After 16 years of being in the anchor chair every day, I want time to do more of what I love the most. More connecting, listening, and reporting in the field,” Mitchell said. “Especially, as whoever is elected next week is going to undertake the monumental task of handling two foreign wars and the political divisions here at home. So, sometime after the inaugural next January, I’ve asked NBC and MSNBC for the opportunity to continue covering those stories but from a different vantage point, still at NBC News and at MSNBC, still as chief Washington [and] foreign affairs correspondent, just not on a schedule of a daily show.”
“So come sometime next year, you’ll see me in your living rooms, still see me on your mobile devices and on other platforms, but perhaps also in your hometowns and cities,” she continued. “Still asking the questions to get the answers that you deserve.”
The 77-year-old journalist recently traveled with U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken to the Middle East where she had to leave the studio 35 minutes into her show, which starts at noon Eastern time, to catch her international flight, The Washington Post reported. The trip showed the hardship of hosting a cable news show while serving in two separate roles on the network.
Rebecca Blumenstein, president of editorial at NBC News, said it is about time for Mitchell to get back out on the field, according to the Post.
“Being an anchor is pretty time-consuming,” she said. “It’s time that she doesn’t have to be doing reporting that can resonate across NBC.”
Mitchell joined NBC News in 1978 and has hosted her show, “Andrea Mitchell Reports,” since its debut in 2008.
