Long-time news anchor says he was fired over personal political post criticizing Harris voters

A longtime, well-respected Mississippi newsman has been fired for publicly airing his political views on social media.

Former Biloxi station WLOX anchor David “Dave” Elliott announced his termination in a Facebook post published last Friday.

“I’m no longer at WLOX as of 10-25-24,” he wrote in the post. “The corporation doesn’t like my political views.”

The political views he mentioned were stated in a Twitter/X video that he published last Wednesday.

“This is so unlike me because I’m usually a vote, vote, vote guy,” he began in the clip. “I’d like to see 100 percent voter turnout, whether it’s for your local sheriff or president of the United States.”

“But if your hatred for Donald Trump is so strong — that’s kind of a sickness, by the way — but if it’s so strong that you’re planning to go in that voting booth and vote for Kamala Harris, do you listen to her? Do you know anything about her? Anyway. Do yourself, do the country, do the world a favor, and just sit it out. Stay home; don’t vote. This has been a public service announcement,” he added.

Speaking with the Sun Herald after he was let go, Elliott revealed that he was told of the termination by station General Manager Rick Williams.

“X was brought up in the conversation, which lasted only about 30 seconds because I left,” he recalled. “I was like, ‘OK, see ya.'”

“I was going to leave at the end of the year, anyway. I have irons in the fire. Things are going to move at the speed of light. Keep your eyes open,” he added.

Elliott had been at WXLOS since 1985. According to an old 2017 WLOX story about him, he used to co-anchor “The 4 O’Clock Show” and “WLOX News at 5:00 pm,” and he used to co-host “WLOX News This Week” and “WLOX News at 10:00 pm.”

“As a native of Minneapolis, David grew up in a cold environment,” the old story reads. “But the beautiful weather and warm climate of South Mississippi suits him better these days. When he’s not at work, David loves to follow sports and play golf on the many courses in our area. He also enjoys reading and keeping up with politics.”

“I like my job,” he said at the time. “It gives me a chance to meet people and experience life on the coast from all angles.”

Dovetailing back to the present, he claims he’s always been politically impartial on the air and that his Twitter/X video was political satire.

“Elliott explained … that he draws a distinction between his former job and social media,” according to the Sun Herald. “The job, he said, is journalism but social media is entertainment. He said his videos are political satire.”

“I don’t consider social media journalism,” he said in his own words. “Social media is a toy. I have fun. I play. I look at it as satire. I get paid for doing television.”

But, the Herald notes, “Journalists who work for media organizations are generally prohibited from doing things such as posting personal political opinions on their social media pages, putting candidate signs outside their homes, or donating to campaigns.”Lon

Unless of course, they work for CNN or MSNBC — then they evidently have the right to shove their political opinions down everybody’s throats.

Some of Elliott’s former coworkers have also thrown him under the bus.

“If you had wanted to make irresponsible comments like this, Dave, how could you even call yourself a journalist?” leftist co-worker Mike Lacy tweeted at Elliott. “Good God, I can’t tell you how disappointed I am with this post.”

Despite being taken off air, Elliott continues to post freely on Twitter/X, where one of his most recent videos is about insurrections.

“You know what’s so rich?” he begins in the video. “The same people who talk the loudest about election integrity, democracy, insurrection, are the same ones who pulled a coup on Joe Biden, took his 14 million votes, all of his delegates, and just handed them to Kamala Harris.”

“Before that, they hired a team of lawyers to keep RFK Jr. off the ballot in Democrat primaries. It kind of makes you wonder what they’re capable of moving forward. And you know what’s even more disturbing? There are millions of people who don’t even seem to care,” he adds.
