With former President Donald J. Trump gaining daily momentum as Kamala Harris implodes, speculation is turning to who he will tap to staff his administration if he’s elected and one familiar name has come up.
According to a New York Post report, former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy has emerged as a “dark horse” candidate to land the position of White House chief of staff, a job that will be critical to the advancement of Trump’s America First agenda in a second term.
McCarthy resigned from Congress last year two months after his historic ouster by a group of conservative Republicans following a brief but tumultuous tenure as Speaker marked by serious disagreements over government funding and money for Ukraine.
The Post reported that the California Republican “is widely seen as a top contender to be former President Donald Trump’s first chief of staff if he retakes the White House following the Nov. 5 election, according to sources familiar with the deliberations.”
However, “No final decision has been made and there is no sign that McCarthy is campaigning for the coveted role — though one person said the Californian has shown openness to being part of a second Trump administration in some capacity,” according to the outlet.
If he wins, Trump is expected to hit the ground running as he will be up against fierce opposition from obstructionist Democrat lawmakers, a Deep State that is hostile to him, and a corrupt media as he puts policies into place that will reverse the damage done to the country by Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. The paper suggested that McCarthy’s Washington, D.C. experience could give him “an edge” over other possible choices.
Also considered to be top contenders for the job are Susie Wiles, the Trump campaign co-manager, and Brooke Rollins, a former White House domestic policy adviser. According to the Post, Wiles is “currently viewed as the front-runner due to her closeness with the Republican nominee and her highly praised management of his 2024 presidential bid.”
An unnamed source told the outlet that the former speaker “knows DC better than Susie,” but she “knows Trump better than him.”
“I think Susie is most likely,” the source said, “and Brooke least likely, but all three are being considered.”
The Post quotes one Republican strategist who said that the ex-speaker would be an “effective” chief of staff, describing him as a “prolific fundraiser” and “one of the top messengers for the Republican Party.”
McCarthy is “clearly” angling for a “big job in a Trump restoration,” GOP operative Dennis Lennox said, according to the paper.
“Through repeated appearances on Fox News,” he added, “he’s been paying homage to Trump and speaking to Trump and Trump alone.”
But another source seemed to throw cold water on the McCarthy speculation. “Kevin legit doesn’t want it,” they said.
“President Trump announced a Trump Vance transition leadership group to initiate the process of preparing for what comes after the election,” Trump campaign Communications Director Steven Cheung said in a statement on the transition process.
“But formal discussions of who will serve in a second Trump Administration is premature,” he added. “President Trump will oversee a smooth transition and choose the best people for his Cabinet to undo all the damage dangerously liberal Kamala Harris has done to our country.”
Trump could pull a random name out of a hat and it would be a vast improvement over former White House Chief of Staff John Kelly, a bitter backstabber with a Hitler fixation who has endeared himself to Democrats with his highly dubious claims about his former boss.
