Biden-Harris admin airdropping taxpayer cash, tax credits for manufacturing in battleground state as election nears

The Biden-Harris administration invested in two major manufacturing projects in the key swing state of Michigan with just weeks left before election day.

The administration handed out a “significant” tax credit to a $900 million manufacturing project in Michigan on Tuesday, according to The Detroit News. The report comes after the Department of Commerce signed a preliminary memorandum of terms (PMT) on Monday to award up to $325 million in proposed funding to Hemlock Semiconductor (HSC), a manufacturer of polysilicon based in Michigan, according to a press release.

The tax credit is going toward Corning Inc., a tech company that manufactures specialty glass and ceramic products, according to The Detroit News. The project would involve the construction of a solar panel component manufacturing facility and is projected to create more than 1,100 jobs, according to the report.

“Michigan is very, very important to the President and the Vice President,” National Economic Adviser Lael Brainard said in a phone interview, The Detroit News reported. “These are highly skilled, hard-working communities. They’re just great places to make investments.”

The proposed funding for HSC would aid the construction of a new polysilicon manufacturing facility in Hemlock, Michigan, according to the press release. The manufacturing project is expected to create over 1,000 construction jobs and about 180 manufacturing jobs, according to the release.

“Polysilicon is the bedrock of semiconductors, and it’s important we have a reliable source of this material to manufacture the chips that help support our economic and national security,” Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo said in the release. “Because of the Biden-Harris Administration’s CHIPS and Science Act, we are proposing to invest up and down the semiconductor supply chain and support domestic materials suppliers, like HSC, that are helping drive America’s semiconductor manufacturing resurgence and technological leadership – and creating quality jobs all over the country in the process.”

Michigan is considered a key battleground state in the 2024 presidential election. Both former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris have been attempting to court voters in the state.

Trump is leading in all seven battleground states at 48.4% with a 1.2-point lead against Harris’ 47.2%, according to polling averages from RealClearPolling. The Republican nominee is also ahead of Harris in Michigan by 1.2 points.
