Voters favor former President Donald Trump over Vice President Kamala Harris on handling the economy, which is ranked the most important issue among those registered, according to a Gallup poll released Wednesday.
The majority of registered voters, 54%, trust Trump to deal with the economy while 45% favor Harris, according to the poll. The economy ranks the most important of the 22 issues registered voters were surveyed on, with 52% saying it is “extremely important” and 38% saying it is “very important” in driving their vote in the upcoming presidential election.
The portion of voters rating the economy as “extremely important” in driving their vote is the highest since the Great Recession in October 2008, polling at 55%, according to Gallup.
While 66% of Republican and Republican-leaning voters named the economy as extremely important, just 36% of Democrats and Democrat-leaning voters agreed, according to the poll. The top five issues among Republicans, which are the economy, immigration, terrorism and national security, crime, and taxes, have no overlap with Democrats’ top five issues, which are democracy, judicial picks for the U.S. Supreme Court, abortion, healthcare, and education.
Across all voters regardless of party affiliation, the top issues after the economy are democracy, terrorism and national security, judicial picks, immigration, and education, according to the poll. The five lowest issues across party lines are “race relations,” “relations with China,” trade, climate change, and “transgender rights.”
Trump also holds a nine-point edge over Harris on immigration and a five-point lead on foreign affairs, according to the poll. Meanwhile, Harris leads by 26 points on climate change, 16 points on abortion, and 10 points on healthcare.
The Gallup poll surveyed 941 registered voters nationally from Sept. 16 to Sept. 28 with a margin of error of four percentage points.
