‘You’re going to die’: Tampa Bay mayor has bone-chilling warning as Floridians scramble to evacuate

It takes a special kind of storm to spook Floridians, but Hurricane Milton has many in the state double-checking their evacuation plans.

The hurricane is expected to make landfall in the Tampa Bay area as early as Wednesday, and Mayor Jane Castor is not mincing words with her residents. While evacuation orders are usually seen as suggestions by those who have come to live with the storms, Castor’s dire warning may prompt them to think twice.

“There’s never been one like this,” she said to CNN. “This is literally catastrophic, and I can say without any dramatization whatsoever — if you choose to stay in one of those evacuation areas, you’re gonna die.”

“Anyone who was born and raised in the Tampa Bay area has never seen anything like this.”

The National Hurricane Center recorded wind speeds of up to 180 MPH. While Hurricane Milton has been downgraded to a Category 4, there is some speculation that it could return to a Category 5 storm before making landfall. This unpredictability, as well as models that show the storm affecting large swathes of Florida, have caused concern even among those who normally choose to ride out the extreme weather. Those opting to evacuate will want to do so sooner rather than later, as the state’s highways are already reportedly clogged with people trying to get out of Milton’s path.

This comes as Hurricane Helene clean-up and recovery attempts were well underway. Tampa Bay managed to avoid the worst of Helene, but still saw flooding and at least 12 deaths.
