Walz asked if he can be ‘trusted with the truth’ on ’60 Minutes’

Vice President Kamala Harris’s running mate Tim Walz was pressed by “60 Minutes” to explain his history of “misrepresentations,” but his response didn’t exactly inspire confidence.

Walz called himself a “knucklehead” during his debate with his Republican counterpart, J.D. Vance after claiming he was in Hong Kong at the time of the Tiananmen Square massacre. A quick fact-check, conducted by Minnesota Public Radio News and APM Reports, indicates that he had traveled to the area months after. This, paired with other examples of Walz’s loose relationship with the truth, has many wondering if he can be trusted to be America’s next vice president.

When grilled on the subject for “60 Minutes,” Walz explained why he believes that his lies are better than former President Donald Trump’s.

“I think folks know who I am. And I think they know the difference between someone expressing emotion, telling a story, getting a date wrong … rather than a pathological liar like Donald Trump,” he told Bill Whitaker.

The host asked if Walz could be “trusted with the truth” given his tendency to misrepresent his own personal history.

“Yeah. Well – I can – I think I can,” the Minnesota governor replied. “I will own up to being a knucklehead at times, but the folks closest to me know that I keep my word,” he replied.

After being confronted on his Hong Kong claim during the debate, the Democrat also admitted to being a “knucklehead” but says that he really does care about his community. Apparently, that is supposed to make it okay.

“Look, I will be the first to tell you I have poured my heart into my community,” he said. “I’ve tried to do the best I can, but I’ve not been perfect, and I’m a knucklehead at times, but it’s always been about that those same people elected me to Congress for 12 years.”
