Illinois catches hell for contest to redesign state flag: ‘Our current flag is farrrrr too patriotic’

It looks like the state of Illinois is on its way to scrapping its current flag in favor of one designed by residents.

The contest will be accepting submissions until October 18.

“I’m excited to see the creativity of Illinois residents and how they display their passion for our great state,” said Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias. “The symbols that represent and unify our state are important and this presents an excellent opportunity to engage Illinoisans and showcase their pride.”

According to WGN9, “the current flag was adopted in 1969.”

Some of the guidelines for acceptable submissions of replacement include no AI-generated designs, cannot be copied from existing designs or contain trademarked materials, and applicants must include identifying personal information with their submission, including name, address, and relationship to the state of Illinois.

Of all submissions entered, the Illinois Flag Commission will pick their top 10, which the public will be able to vote on beginning January 1, and will continue for “around two months.”
