A math teacher who had previously appeared on the game show ‘Jeopardy!’ is facing child pornography charges.
Winston Nguyen turned himself in on Thursday after it was reported that he was exchanging photos with minors. He is currently facing charges of using a child in a sexual performance and promoting a sexual performance by a child as well as others. It is reported that he pretended to be a teenager on at least 11 different occasions and is accused of trying to get nude photos, and media of “sexual performances,” say prosecutors.
Nguyen allegedly used two SnapChat accounts to exchange messages with the reported victims, five girls and one boy between 13 and 15 years old. The kids were students enrolled in Brooklyn private schools Saint Ann’s, Poly Prep Country Day School, Berkeley Carroll School, and Packer Collegiate Institute. Nguyen himself had been a teacher at Saint Ann’s and was actually arrested at the school in June, but was released without being charged.
“We arranged for his surrender with the prosecutors and detectives,” Frank Rothman, Nguyen’s attorney, said. “He showed up and will be processed like any other defendant.”
Prosecutors have alleged that the suspect even paid one of the children to send him explicit material and that a search of his devices unearthed “extremely disturbing conduct.”
“[T]he fact that he was a teacher and a trusted figure among students make these allegations even more troubling.”
This is not Nguyen’s first run-in with the law, however. Prior to his job as a teacher, he was a home aide who was accused of stealing over $300,000 from an older couple that he had been helping. He reportedly spent this money on things like tickets to the ballet and Florida trips, said authorities. The District Attorney claims that Nguyen would doctor bank statements to cover his tracks, and blocked creditors from being able to contact the couple.
Nguyen faces arraignment Thursday afternoon and the criminal complaint will head to a grand jury, who will decide whether to indict the former ‘Jeopardy!’ champ on the charges.
