Tough crowd: Mitch McConnell brutally heckled at RNC

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) has worn out his welcome with many Republican voters, the last straw being his fiery speech blaming Trump for the protest at the U.S. Capitol on January 6th, claiming the then-president “provoked” the mob that turned violent after being “fed lies.”

The 82-year-old GOP Senate leader was greeted with heckling and a chorus of boos at the Republican National Convention on Monday when he announced Kentucky’s delegates were casting their votes for Trump to be the party’s nominee for president.

Despite their very public differences, McConnell relented to the obvious in March when he endorsed Trump.

“It is abundantly clear that former President Trump has earned the requisite support of Republican voters to be our nominee for President of the United States,” McConnell said in a statement. “It should come as no surprise that as nominee, he will have my support.”

Trump has repeatedly called for McConnell to be replaced as the party’s leader in the Senate, and McConnell will relinquish his historic hold on power in the fall — he has been the leader of the Senate Republican Conference since 2007, making him the longest-serving Senate party leader in U.S. history.

McConnell played an integral role in the seating of three U.S. Supreme Court justices during Trump’s four years in office, though it’s up in the air on how those choices have panned out — this being more on Trump than McConnell.
