Best reactions to ‘big boy’ presser where Biden called Kamala ‘Vice President Trump’

The consensus is clear: “Big Boy” President Joe Biden performed well enough to survive but not well enough to avoid massive mockery.

Speaking from the NATO summit late Thursday, the president held a press conference during which he sought to reassure his critics that he remains with it enough to serve as president for four more years.

According to critics like conservative commentator and radio show host Ben Shapiro, he just barely performed well enough to remain in the race:

But as noted by Shapiro, he “started off rough.” How so? By specifically referring to Vice President Kamala Harris as “Vice President Trump.”

He made the error after he was asked by the press whether he believed Harris had the chops to serve as president in his stead.

“Look, I wouldn’t have picked Vice President Trump to be vice president if I think she’s not qualified to be president,” the 81-year-old president replied, prompting gasps from the audience.

This simple but stunning error triggered widespread reactions, including from former President Donald Trump himself.

“Crooked Joe begins his ‘Big Boy’ Press Conference with, ‘I wouldn’t have picked Vice President Trump to be vice president, though I think she was not qualified to be president.’ Great job, Joe!” he wrote on Truth Social.

Meanwhile, on Twitter/X, memes galore began to flourish following the president’s error, with his critics relishing his mistake.

What made the president’s error that much more galling was that it came a few hours after he similarly referred to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy as “President Putin” in yet another gaffe.

Responding to both gaffes, some meme-makers placed Trump’s face on Harris and Russian President Vladimir Putin’s face on Zelenskyy.

During the press conference, the president made a few other errors.

He referred to his chief of staff as his “commander in chief”:

And he reportedly confused Russia and China at least five times.

While bad, his performance Thursday still surpassed his widely panned performance during his debate weeks earlier against Trump.

As noted earlier, the performance was just enough to stave off critics. But it was also just enough to thrill the Trump campaign.

“Former President Donald Trump’s advisers and allies viewed President Joe Biden’s press conference as the best-case scenario for the Republican’s campaign: not enough to force him out but with enough errors that they can mine the event for opposition material,” according to Politico.

“Trump’s campaign is still hoping Biden stays in the race, believing he is the weakest candidate for the former president to face in November. His strategy, in part, centers on the notion that Biden is not mentally fit to be president,” the report continued.
