Despite his disastrous performance in the debate, we have an excellent opportunity to make the case for Joe Biden. I don’t like him, but many people do, and so we should attempt to sing his praises.
My neighbor, for example, thinks Joe is a nice guy who can be trusted. She hates Trump. I asked her why. “Because Trump lies,” she replied. “Don’t we have proof that Biden lies?” I asked. “No, that is fake news,” she said.
My barber says Trump is not a nice guy. “He treats people badly,” he said. “But what do you like about Biden?” I inquired. No response. The reasons people give me for liking Biden always seem to boil down to a dislike for Trump.
Well, okay, there must be a better reason for making a case for Joe. He wants to help America, he says. He must be a nice guy, right? Of course, this is a man who has never spoken to his granddaughter. That comes under the heading of personal business, so we should be willing to overlook it.
Trump, on the other hand, is famous for his bombastic tweets. That is something we should not be willing to overlook. Even if we have evidence that he was an outstanding president for four years. He restored the economy after Obama practically destroyed it. He lowered unemployment for minorities. He made us energy-independent. He stood up to China’s expansionist foreign policy and one-sided economic practices. He stabilized conditions on the southern border. He rebuilt the military. He enhanced peace in the Middle East.
All of Trump’s actions accrued to the benefit of the nation. “I don’t care whether you like Trump or not,” said Bill O’Reilly. “Trump governed this nation in a responsible way where everybody prospered. And if you don’t believe that, you’re a moron!”
A lot of people don’t believe it. They applauded when Biden stepped into the Oval Office and reversed all of Trump’s policies, setting us on a course of economic and social ruin. They are much happier not having to put up with Trump’s rough edges. It has been worth it, they insist, even if people are paying more for gas, food, and heating. Even if we have been plagued by staggering inflation and higher taxes. Even after the humiliating defeat in Afghanistan. Even after Biden invited millions of illegals into our country with no regard for the increased crime and social costs.
It all means nothing because Joe is a nice guy and Trump isn’t. They said the same thing about Winston Churchill. In the 1930s, Churchill was vilified by the British political establishment when he warned about the threat posed by Nazi Germany. They thought he was crazy. Until 1940, that is. It turned out that not only was he right about Hitler, but Churchill was uniquely qualified to lead Britain in World War II.
As Victor Davis Hanson explains in The Case for Trump, we are lucky to have an American Churchill. Trump, says Hanson, is the classic “tragic figure.” General George Patton. Achilles in the Trojan War. Gary Cooper in High Noon and John Wayne in The Searchers. Each of them is a dangerous, unlikable loner who solves a critical problem when no one else can, often by violence. Trump, the political outsider, has many unpleasant traits but he is the only Republican who is able to deal effectively with the extreme left wing of the Democratic Party and its allies in the Deep State.
Trump has been the object of an unparalleled barrage of attacks because he is a threat to the Washington political establishment. We can’t say that about Joe Biden. He is a nice guy and knows how to get along with the Beltway elite. And therein lies the case for Joe Biden. Thanks for allowing me to spell it out.
