The prime minister of Denmark was attacked by a man who assaulted her on a busy street, leaving her “shaken,” but able to walk away from the scene of the disturbing incident.

On Friday, Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen was in Kultorvet Square in the Nordic country’s capital city of Copenhagen when the incident took place.

The Danish leader was rushed to the hospital for an examination and is reportedly recovering from whiplash, the attacker was taken into custody by police.

“Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen was beaten on Friday evening at Kultorvet Square in Copenhagen by a man who was subsequently arrested. The Prime Minister is shocked by the incident,” Frederiksen’s office said in a statement, according to Fox News.

“We have one person arrested in the case, which we are now investigating. At this time, we have no further comments or remarks on the case,” Copenhagen police said of the suspect, who is described as a 39-year-old man who is expected to appear in court on Saturday. Police did not immediately cite a motive for the attack on the world leader.

“A man came by in the opposite direction and gave her a hard shove on the shoulder, causing her to fall to the side,” two witnesses identified as Marie Adrian and Anna Ravn describe the incident. The two told the newspaper BT that they had seen the 46-year-old prime minister arrive in the square while they were sitting near a fountain at around 6:00 p.m,” according to CBS News.

They told the outlet that it was a “strong push but the prime minister didn’t fall to the ground. Frederiksen then took a seat at a cafe.

“She seemed a little stressed,” said Soren Kjergaard a local who works as a barista and saw Frederiksen being escorted away by security personnel after she was assaulted.

“Well, I saw the prime minister sitting with a friend at this table and just I think was one minute, two minutes afterwards, four PET (Danish national security and intelligence service) guys showed up, talked about an arrest has been made. And then she was escorted by the four PETs to some place around in the middle of the square and then escorted just a way around the corner,” said Kjaergaard.

“Outraged by the assault on the Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen @statsmin in Copenhagen tonight,” said European Council chief Charles Michel. “I strongly condemn this cowardly act of aggression. All my thoughts are with you and your family, dear Mette and hope you overcome this horrendous attack soon.”

“Mette is naturally shocked by the assault,” Danish environment minister Magnus Heunicke said on X, formerly Twitter. “I must say, it shakes all of us who are close to her.”

“NATO allies stand together to protect our values, freedom, democracy and our rule of law,” said NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg in a post to X.
