One of Canada’s most notorious serial killers has been sent to his great reward after finding himself on the receiving end of the sort of deadly violence that he perpetrated against his victims, whom he mercilessly killed and fed to his pigs.
Robert “Willie” Pickton who was dubbed “the pig farmer killer” died from injuries sustained when he was attacked by a fellow inmate at the Port-Cartier Institution, a maximum security prison facility in Quebec.
The 74-year-old was gravely injured in the May 19 attack in which the killer was “speared” in the head with a broken broom handle, a “major assault” that left him on life support. Pickton passed away on Friday, bringing some degree of closure to the families of his victims.

In 2007, Pickton was convicted of six counts of murder and given a life sentence. He once bragged to an undercover cop that he killed 49 women. He was initially charged with the murders of 26 women after an investigation into the disappearances of dozens of prostitutes and drug workers from the sleaziest areas of Vancouver.
A 2002 search of Pickton’s rural British Columbia pig farm turned up the remains and DNA of 33 women.
“During his trial, prosecution witness Andrew Bellwood said Pickton told him how he strangled his victims and fed their remains to his pigs. Health officials once issued a tainted meat advisory to neighbors who might have bought pork from Pickton’s farm, concerned the meat might have contained human remains,” according to Fox News.

“Earlier today, I was made aware of the death of an inmate at Port-Cartier Institution,” said Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc in a statement. “At this time, my thoughts are with the families of the victims of this individual’s heinous crimes.”
The sister of one of Pickton’s victims said that she felt “uplifted and I know it’s her spirit because finally the devil is gone.”
“This news actually gives me a little bit of closure for myself. I’ve had all these feelings today. I know it’s Georgina. And I know she’s happy,” Cynthia Cardinal, whose sister was Georgina Papin said, the Vancouver Sun reported.
Another victim’s cousin described Pickton’s death as “jailhouse justice” as one of Canada’s most notorious murderers is no more.
A 51-year-old inmate was in custody for the fatal attack and the Canadian Correctional Service was conducting an investigation.
“The investigation will examine all of the facts and circumstances surrounding the assault, including whether policies and protocols were followed,” the correctional service said in the statement. “We are mindful that this offender’s case has had a devastating impact on communities in British Columbia and across the country, including Indigenous peoples, victims and their families. Our thoughts are with them.”
“Obviously, Mr. Pickton has caused a lot of pain for many people. Unfortunately, all an attack like this serves to do is further thwart the truth of this case from being told so that all the remaining perpetrators could be brought to justice,” said Lorimer Shenher, a former Vancouver police detective who investigated the disappearances. “It’s been an open secret for more than 20 years that these murders were not committed solely by the hands of Robert Pickton.”
