Troubled waters for Media Matters resulted in what some are deeming “karma” for one employee who celebrated Tucker Carlson’s separation from Fox News.
The liberal watchdog was hit with a lawsuit by X CEO and billionaire Elon Musk last November, in which Musk alleged defamation and accused Media Matters of fabricating photos of advertisements from major companies, comparing them side-by-side to posts from white supremacists and neo-Nazis. This led to several federal investigations from the likes of Republican Attorneys General Ken Paxton of Texas and Andrew Bailey of Missouri, who were probing into potential fraudulent activity through alleged manipulations of data on X.
Following these legal moves, Media Matters announced the layoff of at least a dozen staffers, and it’s clear many at the outlet believe Musk is directly responsible.
Media Matters President Angelo Carusone issued a statement on the layoffs Thursday, where he cited “legal assault on multiple fronts” and a rapidly changing media landscape.
“We’re confronting a legal assault on multiple fronts and given how rapidly the media landscape is shifting, we need to be extremely intentional about how we allocate resources in order to stay effective,” he said. “Nobody does what Media Matters does. So, we’re taking this action now to ensure that we are sustainable, sturdy and successful for whatever lies ahead.”
While a number of people took to social media to discuss the nature and effect of their dismissal, popular X account Libs of TikTok shared one take that prompted Musk himself to respond.
“Bad News: I’ve been laid off from @mmfa, along with a dozen colleagues. There’s a reason far-right billionaires attack Media Matters with armies of lawyers: They know how effective our work is, and it terrifies them (him),” wrote Kat Abughazaleh.
LOTT noted that this appears to be the same woman who celebrated “Tucker-Got-Firedversary.”

Tucker Carlson getting fired was a blessing for him.
He’s more popular now than ever.
This woman getting fired is justice.
Sweet justice.

Now let’s compare how she does after being fired vs how Tucker has been doing.
