Russian adversaries differ from initial impression

Op-ed views and opinions expressed are solely those of the author.

When relying on CNN and MSNBC, a conclusion can quickly be drawn. The Russian people are currently held hostage by an autocratic regime hell-bent on recreating the former Soviet Union.

Unfortunately, those oppressed people seen through available media lenses are the minority. This is something that former U.S. Ambassador to Russia, Michael McFaul learned the hard way: “The majority of Russians don’t think that Democracy works.” In his book, “From Cold War to Hot Peace,” McFaul’s frustration is evident. In his thinking, the Russian people would have favored a liberal Democrat such as Boris Nemtsov over Vladimir Putin if given the chance. It proved to be an illusion.

What people forget is the fact that Russians are not Western civilization. They may look like us, but they did not grow up with Aesop’s Fables and Canterbury Tales. In their thinking, Democracies ultimately end up Oligarchies. “Russian peoples staying together” is the goal. They instinctively gravitate to a “CEELA MOOSHEENA.” (Strong Man). Whether it be Putin, Stalin, Peter the Great or Ivan the Terrible, they remember Russia’s ascendency was always accompanied by a Ceela Moosheena!

A Historical “Geography Problem.”

Russia’s borders are flat and open. They have been invaded from all directions, save the North. They have always coveted a year-round, warm-weather port. 80-85% of the Crimean population is Russian. Crimea voted 91% in favor of rejoining Russia in a 2015 referendum. The Don Bas is roughly 55% Russian. Included are the mostly depleted Anthracite coal fields. The two regions together equate to an area the size of West Virginia. Ukraine currently is about the size of Texas.

Russia supports Ukraine ceding previous Polish territory to Poland and previous Hungarian territory back to Hungary. They favor Moldova ceding the Transdniestria to Ukraine with the remainder of the country becoming part of Romania. There would be subsequent non-aggression treaties signed by all parties.

Some Americans can’t seem to get it, when it comes to climate change! For Russia, global warming translates to ice-free ports in St. Petersburg and Vladivostok It equates to an open northern route. They want to develop the vast Siberian boreal, where some of the world’s finest timber stands lie.

Identifying the True American Players

The United States has too many Senators and Bureaucrats who have been embedded in their current positions for too long!

In a recent AP poll, 70% of Republicans indicated that they trust Donald Trump more than the State Department (27%) and the Pentagon, (56%). Trump likely understands Putin better than any politician in the world. His statement, “Putin understands a deal and I know how to make one,” is bald but accurate. What many are missing is “what would America get in return?”

Both Democrats and Neo-cons see Ukrainian concessions as “appeasement.” They compare such posture to British Prime Minister, Neville Chamberlain’s willingness to acquiesce to Adolph Hitler in 1938. John Foster Dulles used the same argument in advocating full engagement in Vietnam. Trump sees the Russian-Ukraine conflict as reminiscent of “Northerners launching their invasion of the South in the American Civil War.” In the minds of Northern politicians, the South was part of the United States.

Would Putin stop with Crimea and the Don Bas? Probably not. A clue may lie in his willingness for Ukraine to cede its western frontiers back to their original owners, Poland and Hungary. It could also be expected that Belarus would again become part of Russia. In Russian thinking, Belarusians and Ukrainians are Russians. Poles and Hungarians are not.

Trump is acutely aware of this. He also knows of the significance of Russia retaining Outer Manchuria. He would see it as an opportunity to make the world unquestionably safer in one bold throw. It would begin with non-aggression treaties signed with all European allies, including the Baltic countries. The United States would recognize Outer Manchuria as Russian territory.

Russia would recognize the Monroe Doctrine as the law of the Western Hemisphere and pledge military support for its enforcement. Putin would return South Ossetia and Abkhazia to the Republic of Georgia. He would also join with Trump to convince North Korea that “nuclear weapons would not be an option” for their country.

The end result- “Checkmate China!”

Undermining “Deep State” Standards

What is a non-starter in U.S. “Administrative state circles” is the reality that Americans are seen as untrustworthy by Russians. There would need to be an effort for America to “prove itself worthy.” That can easily be accomplished by dismantling 75% of the administrative state, AKA “the deep state.” Putin contends that America is run by a “bunch of men in black suits” in the background.

Unfortunately, he is correct. Vivek Ramaswamy stated America was founded based on three branches of government. Not four. He is likewise correct.

Perhaps most astounding to Americans is Putin’s potential openness to join Trump is a dual aspiration to “expunge Marxism from the planet.” Democrats with their Stalinist orientation and Neocons with their Trotskyite inclinations would see such an objective as a threat to the status quo. Nevertheless, it would be a noble objective. 100 million people died at the hands of Marxism in the previous century, lest we forget.

Putin and Ron DeSantis are perhaps the two “most anti-woke” leaders in the world. This distinction is not lost on the MAGA faithful!

Many Democrats and Neo-cons may consider all these people despicable. But millions collectively think they are the answer.
