ESPN host Stephen A. Smith defended former President Donald J. Trump’s recent remarks suggesting that black people can identify with him because of the criminal indictments that he’s facing.
Smith, who has been raining down truth bombs as of late, agreed with the presumptive GOP nominee that the indictments brought against him by partisan prosecutors abusing a politicized judicial system have given him credibility with black voters who feel that they have also been on the receiving end of unfair treatment.
During a Thursday appearance on Sean Hannity’s Fox News show, the host and NBA analyst discussed the criticism of Trump’s remarks which were decried as racist, a description that he disagrees with.

“Dare I say something that might, will probably be termed the most uncomfortable thing that I’ve ever had to articulate out of my mouth from a political perspective?” Smith said in the middle of a blistering rant about the state of life in Joe Biden’s America.
“But I gotta tell you something., as much as people may have been abhorred by Donald Trump’s statement weeks ago, talking about how black folks, he’s hearing that black folks find him relatable because what he’s going through is similar to what black Americans have gone through, he wasn’t lying! He was telling the truth,” he said.
“When you see the law, law enforcement, the court system, and everything else being exercised against him, it is something that black folks throughout this nation can relate to with some of our historic, iconic figures. We’ve seen that happen throughout society,” Smith continued.
So, no matter what race, what ethnicity you may emanate from, we relate to you when you’re suffering like that ’cause we know we have,” he said. “And that’s what he articulated. As unpopular as it was, as much as we didn’t like to hear it, it’s the truth, and there’s no way around it.”
Smith was referring to Trump’s speech to voters at the annual Black Conservative Federation (BCF) in Columbia, S.C. back in February.
“Black people are so much on my side because they see what happens to me happens to them,” Trump said to applause. “Does that make sense? I’ve heard that.”
He added that his Fulton County booking mugshot from Fani Willis’s political persecution was also popular with black people.

“I got indicted for nothing, for something that is nothing,” Trump told the crowd. “And a lot of people said that’s why the black people like me, because they have been hurt so badly and discriminated against, and they actually viewed me as I’m being discriminated against. It’s been pretty amazing but possibly, maybe, there’s something there.”
“It’s much ado about nothing,” Smith remarked on a recent edition of his podcast about the Stormy Daniels “hush money” trial. “To my liberal friends out there, all you’re doing is showing that you’re scared you can’t beat him on the issues and the merits.”
“Because tens of millions of people see what extent the other side is willing to go through just to keep him out of office because they can’t beat him on their own merits,” the host added.
