MSNBC host Al Sharpton called out President Joe Biden Monday for appearing at a “ritzy” fundraiser with celebrities Thursday, warning that former President Donald Trump was making inroads with working-class voters.
Biden attended a $25 million fundraiser for the Democratic National Committee with former Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton attended by multiple celebrities, including “Glee” star Lea Michele, actor Ben Platt and singer Lizzo. Sharpton said that Biden could leave the door “open” for working-class voters to back his predecessor.

“You have to address the people and let them know you feel their situation and avoid[ing] that is to open them up toward people like Trump that can exploit that,” Sharpton told “Morning Joe” co-host Jonathan Lemire. “I think that Trump going to where he knew and his people guided him to, it wasn’t like he had to stand in line, the Democrats were not going [to] talk to those people, and I think you gotta go, just going there gives you some points and then saying something to them that makes them understand that you understand them means a lot and it’s happening across the board, even in black and brown communities.”
Trump attended the wake of slain NYPD officer Jonathan Diller Thursday while Biden flew to attend the star-studded fundraiser.
“I told somebody in the White House, I said, ‘You know, I’m not in the campaigns at all. If I was going to do anything in the city, a big beautiful ritzy night with the two ex-presidents, I would have had Biden that morning have breakfast in Harlem or Brooklyn or something to connect people because the average person in New York that’s dealing with being afraid of the subway or dealing with a policeman being killed didn’t relate to a ritzy thing. Balance it out. You got to do the ritzy thing to raise your money but let me feel like I’m part of the concern.’”
Trump currently leads President Joe Biden by 1.0% in the RealClearPolitics average of national general election polls for a head-to-head matchup, a lead that grows to 2.4% when Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Green Party candidate Jill Stein, and Independent candidate Cornel West are included.
