Jill Biden takes in U2 concert, Bono dedicates song to the ‘great’ first lady

U2 frontman Bono can’t seem to help himself when it comes to delving into politics, much to the chagrin of many of his fans who tolerate the Irish rocker’s habit of tripping over his big heart.

The popular band was closing out it’s Las Vegas residency at the Sphere venue over the weekend when Bono gave a musical shoutout to first lady Jill Biden, dedicating a song to her and other “great women.”

The U2 residency began in September, and on the final night while introducing All I Want is You, Bono said he was dedicating the tune to “all the great women in our lives.”

“Our partners, our mothers, our daughters, all the women on the U2 crew, all the great women in our audience that we feel we know, and all the great women in parts of the world going through very difficult circumstances that we could never know,” the singer said from the stage.

“And one woman in particular who is with us tonight, she’s a teacher,” Bono said. “She’s your first lady — so this is for Jill Biden.”

The line about Mrs. Biden being a teacher is a reference to her supposed role as an English professor at Northern Virginia Community College, of course.

The first lady, who featured Bono as her special guest last year at President Biden’s State of the Union address, was in Las Vegas at the time campaigning for her husband to women voters.

The dedicated tune is a beautiful song inspired by Bono’s wife Ali that was released in 1988 on Rattle and Hum. Interestingly, the song is often misinterpreted, according to the lead singer. The song is more of a message from Ali to Bono, whose real name is Paul Hewson.

Bono also dedicated a song to Yulia Navalnaya, the widow of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny who he said “continues the fight against Vladimir Putin for a free Russia.”

Leading the audience in singing along to the chorus of Crowded House hit Don’t Dream It’s Over, he encouraged concertgoers to record the singalong and “send it to whoever loves freedom that you know.”
