Former NFL star jumped, fends off attackers in wild brawl caught on video

Former NFL star Cam Newton gave a good accounting of himself when a group of men jumped him during a 7-on-7 football event this weekend.

Then again, Newton dodged 300-pound defensive linemen for 11 seasons — the flamboyant 6-foot-5 former Carolina Panthers quarterback is no slouch himself, having played at 245 pounds.

Video of Newton brawling with the men who appear to be from Top Shelf Performance, who had teams playing in the first “We Ball Sports” 7v7 tournament in Atlanta, according to Fox News. Newton also had a 7v7 team competing in the event.

It’s not clear in the footage how the fight started and Newton, who was dressed in all-black and wearing a top hat, is not seen throwing any punches. Instead, he attempts to corral a man attacking him as another man in a white t-shirt runs up and sucker-punches the onetime NFL MVP

Event personnel quickly intervened to break up the fight, along with a member of law enforcement. No appears to have been injured and it’s uncertain whether any charges were filed.

A comment Newton made in a video before the tournament stands out as a possible motivating factor, Fox News reported.

“If you beat my team – 15U C1N Red or 18UC1N Platinum – I will pay every single player on the team. Tell me who’s doing that. If that ain’t putting your money where your mouth is, I don’t know what to say,” he said.

Newton’s 18U C1N Platinum team was defeated on the first day of the tournament by TopShelf Performance.

TSP general manager Steph Brown wrote on his Instagram Story on Saturday, “We need that up out ya @cameron1newton or you can write a check payable too [sic] @topshelf7v7.”

Here’s a quick sampling of responses to the story, as seen on X:
