Centrist organization approaches Chris Christie regarding potential third party, bipartisan ticket

Chris Christie may have thrown in the towel on his longshot GOP White House bid but a group seeking to field a third-party alternative may be interested in the one-issue candidate.

The blustery former New Jersey governor acknowledged the obvious when he told supporters that he had no path to the nomination, dropping out on Wednesday and sparing himself another humiliating drubbing in New Hampshire, the graveyard for his last presidential run in 2016.

But while the outspoken Trump hater is no longer a viable option for a Republican establishment desperate to keep the former president from a return to Washington, the centrist No Labels organization is reportedly keen on luring Christie for a bipartisan “unity” ticket that could potentially lure enough RINOs to swing the election to Joe Biden.

“I’d like to reach out to him and see if he, Gov. Christie, is at all interested in being on a bipartisan No Labels Unity ticket this year,” former U.S. senator Joe Lieberman, the group’s founding chairman told SiriusXM host Michael Smerconish on Thursday. “He could be a very strong candidate.”

This week, NBC News reported that No Labels “has made overtures to Christie through donors and allies,” citing the now standard anonymous sources.

“It is not clear if Christie has authorized any conversations to take place on his behalf,” according to the outlet. “These conversations all happened before Christie dropped out Wednesday, and some of them occurred in recent weeks, according to one of the sources familiar.”

“Neither the governor nor anyone on the campaign has had conversations with No Labels,” Maria Comella, the former governor’s campaign manager said after he ran up the white flag on his GOP campaign.

“Asked if Christie would entertain the idea, Comella said she had not talked about it with him but added that Christie was clear in his speech that he was ‘not going away,’” NBC News reported.

Last summer, Christie didn’t seem to be enthusiastic about No Labels, telling ABC’s George Stephanopoulos, “I think it’s a fool’s errand.”

“I’m not in this for showtime. I’m not in this for making a point. I’m in this to get elected president of the United States, and there are only two people who will get elected president of the United States: the Republican nominee for president and the Democratic nominee for president,” Christie said in a July interview on ABC’s “This Week.”

Christie could bring instant weight to a long-rumored No Labels ticket with other names being attached to the “fool’s errand” having been renegade Democrat Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia and former Maryland Governor Larry Hogan, a Republican who has many fans in the media but questionable national appeal.

“Political leaders need to listen more to the majority of Americans and less to extremists on the far left and right,” No Labels states on its website. “We can still love and respect people who do not share our political opinions.”
