Better be careful what you wish for!
In the decade before last Colorado, a mostly rural, traditionally conservative state has been essentially highjacked by throngs of mostly “transient West Coasters,” who moved to the state with the favorable Recreational Cannabis legalization that took place. Settling largely in the Denver-Boulder areas, they made their Bay area values felt. The current state Supreme Court reflects this paradigm.
This one-party-rule-inspired court disqualified Donald Trump from the 2024 ballot. Never mind that more than 1.3 million Coloradoans voted for him in 2020! At best, this is ill-advised. At worst, it is dangerous. Independent Presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. thought so too.
“If Trump is kept out of office through judicial fiat rather than being defeated in a fair election, his supporters will never accept the result. This country will become ungovernable.
“It’s time to trust the voters. It is up to the people to decide who the best candidate is. Not the courts. The people. That’s Democracy 101,” Kennedy said. “When any candidate is deprived of his right to run, the American people are deprived of their right to choose.”
Domino Effect Could Yield Uncontrollable Result
The next two questions become, “what next” and “where will it end?”
We are already seeing the cards. Democrats are attempting to take Trump’s name off California, Michigan and Maine’s ballots. Republicans are petitioning to take Biden off Arizona, Georgia and Pennsylvania’s ballot. You can see that the lines are being drawn. Not good!
Some were surprised when House Speaker Mike Johnson did not concur with Marjorie Taylor Greene’s conclusion that a “national divorce” might be the country’s best option. Maybe it’s because Johnson, as a historian, has studied the previous civil war. Assuming that he did, it is a certainty that he could recount the brutality that quietly took place during Louisiana’s reconstruction.
The victorious Union decided that mere reunion and emancipation were insufficient. Seeing that the state’s wealth was in the hands of landowners, they first, disenfranchised the white male population. They subsequently raised property taxes to levels that nobody could pay them. The result: Thousands were taxed out of their homes, losing their lands and livelihoods.
Could Another Wealth Transfer Actually Happen?
Alt-right podcasters enthusiastically suggest that a worldwide wealth transfer may be in the making. The “Nesara-Gesara” movement calls for all interest paid since 1940 to be returned to the payers. The political establishment and their corporate media “harumph sayers” dismiss it as a conspiracy theory. Yet one certainty remains: A massive wealth transfer DID take place following the last civil war.
In 1860 Mississippi was the wealthiest state in the Union. Arkansas was the poorest Southern state. Yet Arkansas was richer than Connecticut, the most affluent Northern state. Obviously, things don’t rank anything close to that today! Don’t say it can’t happen!
Johnson is certainly versed on the potential verdicts of a national break-up. Historians today conclude that the far right and the far left had taken over politics in 1860. Wise men reminded that there were routes available if the desire to reconcile held. Not enough were in the mood to listen!
Today, we may be approaching an 1860 type stalemate. Then, there were numerous candidates contending for the presidency. Abraham Lincoln was elected as a plurality president. His name was not included on ballots in ten of the states. Upon his election, South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Louisiana, Texas, Alabama and Georgia seceded.
There is supreme hope that SCOTUS will tell Colorado and the world that a state court cannot keep a national candidate off the ballot. While this may not happen, it stands to be the reprieve that a divided United States may require at this juncture.
