New York official blames ‘liberal bail reform’ for helping illegal immigrants commit crimes

Daily Caller News Foundation

The Nassau County, New York, executive testified to a congressional subcommittee Tuesday that there’s rampant crime in his area due to illegal immigrant criminals operating with impunity thanks to “liberal” bail reform.

Long Island’s Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman testified that Chilean gang members were released from custody without bail during the House Homeland Subcommittee hearing. Nassau County has opted against sanctuary status that would’ve shielded illegal immigrants from law enforcement.

“We have seen a surge in crime by migrants who have engaged in all types of criminal activity from drug dealing, car theft, burglary to more violent crimes. Recently, a gang from Chile was arrested by our outstanding Nassau County police department only to be released without bail due to state laws that give more rights to criminals than they do the victims,” Blakeman said.

“These Chilean gang members that were part of this migrant program were freed by liberal bail laws, they disappeared and they may still be in the United States committing more crimes against the public. That is outrageous and it is dangerous,” Blakeman said.

Blakeman has been vocal in stopping Nassau County from receiving illegal immigrants that have been overwhelming New York City, which has seen roughly 146,000 arrive between the spring of 2022 and November, according to The New York Times.

“The federal government should mandate that any migrant in the U.S. who was arrested for a crime with probable cause be deported. Our police officers also arrested someone who was in our country illegally for transporting over three kilos of pure fentanyl that was smuggled across the border illegally from China to Nassau County,” Blakeman said.

“I would urge this committee and the other members of Congress to consider a commonsense approach to immigration and seal our borders. Nobody should be let into this country until they have had a hearing and found eligible for asylum status,” Blakeman said.
