Republican Texas Rep. Michael McCaul sparred with Democratic New York Rep. Dan Goldman on Wednesday during a House Homeland Security Committee hearing over Goldman’s defense of the Biden administration’s record on the border.
McCaul accused Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas of “aiding and abetting the deaths and the criminal enterprise” as a result of border policies that have seen a surge of fentanyl trafficking and illegal immigration into the U.S., during a Homeland Security Committee hearing on Wednesday. Goldman told McCaul it was inappropriate to make such an accusation, prompting McCaul to further exemplify Mayorkas’ “dereliction of duty” to Goldman.

“I think it’s incredibly dangerous to accuse Secretary Mayorkas of aiding and abetting crimes. As you well know, you need to have the intent to do that,” Goldman said. “Whether you disagree or not with Secretary Mayorkas’ approach to dealing with the border, to accuse him of aiding and abetting crime is very serious, and is unwarranted in this situation.”
“I live in a border state, you don’t,” McCaul responded. “I’ve dealt with this issue for 25 years, I’ve never seen it this bad.”
“It’s his dereliction of duty that has created this problem in the United States,” McCaul said, pointing at Mayorkas. “7 million people… no legal status, human trafficking, fentanyl. We’ll disagree on this one, but I have to say that the change of policy has created this problem – and [Mayorkas] knows better.”
Homeland Security Committee chair Mark Green intervened to end the exchange so that the hearing of Mayorkas and FBI Director Christopher Wray could continue.
