Last week, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Canadian Parliament invited Ukrainian Fuhrer Volodymyr Zelenskyy to Parliament to honor a 98-year-old Ukrainian WWII veteran, Yaroslav Hunka. While this proclamation resulted in a standing ovation from the members of Canadian Parliament, there’s luckily still a few history buffs online, because the internet quickly recognized that if he was fighting the Russians from Ukraine in WWII, that would quite literally make him a full blown, card carrying, OG Nazi. A REAL Nazi—not the overused blanket term the media and the left calls American conservatives, or even the new age Neo-Nazi type the NY Times is trying to sweep under the rug fighting for Ukraine today in the Azov Battalion. He was a full-blown Hitler-supporting, Jew killing, Nazi. It seems everyone has forgotten that Russia was an ally to the United States and my grandfathers who fought in WWII against Germany. History is complex, but what a difference a generation of anti-Russian propaganda can make. Apparently, as Americans we’re supposed to just forget, forgive, applaud, and cut another check from Congress to support Ukraine in their war no matter what. The Speaker of Canada’s House of Commons has since had to step down after the embarrassing incident, but this incident highlights a fundamental underlying storyline of Ukrainian support; that America keeps giving money to Nazis.
Since the outbreak of the Russian-Ukraine war, those of us with Jewish heritage and situational awareness have been a little iffy on monetarily supporting the, very-well documented use of Neo-Nazi militias. The best thing about this ridiculous ‘Nazi Award Ceremony’ is that it might have been a tipping point for the public to start questioning who the heck we’re funding.
From all of the fear mongering about the rise of American Right-wing militias that are so naturally popping up at Disney World every week, I was convinced they were the number one threat to my safety. There is a massive amount of cognitive dissonance occurring in the media for them to simultaneously promote Ukrainian Nazis as allies and American Nazis as evil. It is this Jew’s hot-take that they are both bad and I do not want to give either of them my tax dollars.
The Nazi-funding-problem has always been there, but it is an especially moralistic dilemma as I work on my extended tax returns next week to consider that my Jewish-American tax dollars are going directly in the hands of the same Nazis that my grandfathers’ generation fought so hard to defeat. We have truly gone from, “Never Again” to “Sieg Heil”, so long as it’s convenient. Why is this not where the discussion leads to when Ukraine funding is debated in the halls of Congress? Why is this not the talking point for the isolationists and populists in Washington D.C.? Most of the argument revolves around money being better spent in America, such as at the border or helping our veterans. All fine points, but this isn’t the concern for the PR firms and think tanks in D.C., as these things have become nothing but saber-rattling points for every bad funding bill.
It is time for us to shift the Overton Window to no longer be a question of “American Interest Abroad”, being “Pro-Ukraine”, “Pro-Democracy”, “Stopping Putin”, “America First”, or any of the short slogans we’ve been fed on either side of the isle regarding this war. From now on I am “Anti-funding Nazis and “Anti-Nazi Award Ceremonies” and you should be too. I would adopt “Anti-Fascist” as well, but it has been co-opted by the left to attack the American Right. Meanwhile, they support Zelenskyy, an actual fascist, who banned his political opponents, controls their media, and siphons the country’s resources. This isn’t a controversial take, but the only reason we’re not hearing this argument in America is because it is the same narrative Putin is using…however, just because it’s coming from Putin, doesn’t necessarily mean the information is wrong
Maybe, just maybe, Putin isn’t a ‘madman’ and has more world knowledge than the American media wants to give him credit for. Certainly, he has more of a grasp of geo-politics than the world leader who shakes hands with the air and falls off bicycles.
By now you might be thinking I’m pro-Russia, which has become somehow less popular of an opinion than being pro-Nazi, but I am not. My position is the same as it has been since the outbreak of the conflict, which is simply that I do not want America to be involved. Who controls the Donbas region or Crimea is not of my concern and not our moral authority to dictate, especially to the tune of $135 Billion with no intention of forcing peace talks in sight. Add in another $6 Billion to Iran to commit an attack on Israel this weekend, and we are funding our enemies far and wide. Men know that the Roman Empire fell in part by going into debt to fight too many wars, and America should be cautious not to repeat this mistake. There is a growing majority of Americans who share this opinion, even if the media wants to ignore the incoming turning of the tides.
With the impending, always anticlimactic government shutdown looming after the 45 day funding bill, I am calling on all Jewish members of Congress and any other rational politicians in D.C. to begin using this as a talking point for cutting Ukrainian war funding. The congressman or senator who proposes a 0% federal tax rate for Jewish-Americans until the Nazi-funding ends will surely grab some headlines. Republicans should gift House Democrats new Ukrainian pins with swastikas in them, because that’s what I see every time we vote to print another billion to Ukraine.
During the Vietnam War, there was a movement of conscientious objectors, and I would take a Muhammed Ali style stance on refusing to pay the US Government to spend my taxes funding Nazis, but I don’t trust our judicial system to grant me a religious exemption, and I enjoy the freedom my grandfather granted me back when we scalped Nazis instead of knighting them.
