GOP senator cites Rand Paul’s ‘limitations of training’ to dismiss McConnell health concerns

A Trump-hating Republican senator clapped back at Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY), whose remarks about Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell’s freezing during a recent press conference possibly being related to a “neurological event” caused a stir.

Senator Bill Cassidy (R-LA) who is a doctor by trade appeared on the grand finale of host Chuck Todd’s stint heading up NBC’s Sunday morning flagship “Meet the Press” where he scoffed at his Kentucky colleague’s “limitations of training” while defending the 81-year-old McConnell’s fitness which has come under question after a series of health-related incidents and growing criticism about the geriatric congressional leadership in general.

“I think Mitch McConnell’s handled it perfectly,” the senator told Todd. “His doctors releasing not just the tests but the results of the tests, and and with that, there is a transparency that allows people to move beyond a number – how old is the person – and to what is actually the kind of science if you will, the medical science of how to evaluate.”

“And I think that should be the standard that folks are held to and I think he’s responded,” Cassidy said.

“What do you make of Senator Rand Paul’s questioning?” Todd asked. “He’s not questioning McConnell but he’s questioning the doctor’s diagnosis.”

“I’m a gastroenterologist. He’s an ophthalmologist… You have to accept the limitations of training,” the senator answered.

Senator Paul raised eyebrows when he expressed skepticism at the excuse that the octogenarian McConnell was just dehydrated.

“I think it’s an inadequate explanation to say this is dehydration… Well, I practiced medicine 25 years and it doesn’t look like dehydration to me, it looks like a focal neurologic event,” Paul said.

McConnell’s latest incident took place last month during a Chamber of Commerce event in Covington, Kentucky when he suddenly froze up behind the podium.

It was the second “freeze” for McConnell at a presser in a month and earlier this year, he missed time on the job after he took a nasty fall during a private dinner at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in Washington, D.C.

Cassidy, who voted to convict former President Donald J. Trump during the second failed impeachment, also sucked up to McConnell in remarks to the USA Today network last week.

“I’m not his doctor, but I will say his doctor put out a statement listing the tests the leader has gone through and there was no evidence or any terrible thing that had happened,” he said. “So at this point, I say that Mitch can still be leader of the Republican caucus.”
