The massive popularity of singer Oliver Anthony whose protest song “Rich Men North of Richmond” has rocketed to the top of the charts may have also put him on the FBI’s radar, according to whistleblower Edward Snowden.
Snowden, who in 2013 blew the lid off of the NSA’s domestic surveillance programs under the Obama regime, suggested that the overnight sensation’s political sentiments have likely spurred the feds to open a file on him, much like they have done with other artists whose crossover appeal was seen as a threat to the establishment.
In a post to X, formerly known as Twitter, Snowden pointed out the problems that come from living under the thumb of a surveillance state that is completely unaccountable and routinely spies on America’s own people.
“After hitting topping the iTunes list and tweeting like this, the FBI will be making space for him another kind of list, too,” he wrote, sharing a post by Anthony with the subversive message “You weren’t born to just pay bills and die.”
“Think I’m kidding? The FBI had a file on John Denver for attending *one* anti-war protest,” added Snowden. “They’re gonna keep making lists — until they’re made to stop.”

Snowden also posted an image of a document showing that the feds had an eye on Denver, the popular singer and songwriter who died in a plane crash in 1997.

A man who has been thrust into a celebrity status that he never asked for, Anthony has tapped into the undercurrent of discontent and anger at a political class that millions of Americans are increasingly coming to believe is irredeemably corrupt and not only no longer represents them, but is overtly hostile to anyone outside of the D.C. Beltway and only serves the uber-wealthy donors and corporations that keep bought and paid for politicians in power.

Leftists have maligned Anthony as a right-winger despite the fact that the ideas that are expressed in his song were once held by a more traditional version of the American left before it cast its lot with perverts, pedophiles, and the police state, but nothing could be further than the truth.
The singer defies such political classifications and recently reacted to “Rich Men North of Richmond” being used during this week’s GOP presidential primary debate.
“It was funny seeing it at the presidential debate,” he said in a video making the rounds on social media. “Because it’s like, I wrote that song about those people you know? So for them to have to sit there and listen to that, that cracks me up.”
“That song has nothing to do with Joe Biden…it’s a lot bigger than Joe Biden,” Anthony added in the clip of him sitting in his pickup truck. “That song is written about the people on that stage, and a lot more too, not just them, but definitely them.”
