Republicans lashed out after the surprise announcement that US Attorney David Weiss has been tabbed as the special counsel to investigate Hunter Biden, a move that was denounced as a cover-up, a whitewash, and an effort to stonewall congressional investigations into the Biden family.
Following Attorney General Merrick Garland’s brief Friday press conference when he delivered the news that Weiss had been elevated to the new role, Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) was among the conservative lawmakers who slammed the appointment.
“The plea deal arranged by Mr. Weiss’ team was the biggest sweetheart deal in the history of the American legal system. To allow this same team to continue to investigate potential financial crimes involving Hunter Biden and others doesn’t pass the smell test,” Graham said in a statement. “If the goal of Attorney General Garland’s decision to appoint Mr. Weiss as special counsel in the Hunter Biden investigation was to put this story to bed, he failed miserably.”
The South Carolina Republican also appeared on Fox News, joining Friday’s edition of “America Reports” where he described Garland’s move as a “political decision, not a legal decision” that’s “dumber than dirt” and will only make matters worse.

“This was a political decision, not a legal decision, they’re trying to put out a fire and they just poured gasoline on it,” the senator said.
“Nobody in their right mind believes that making him a special counsel, Mr. Weiss, cleans up the mess that’s been created,” he continued, explaining how there couldn’t possibly have been a worse pick than Weiss after the “sweetheart deal” that Hunter Biden struck with the DOJ imploded.
“The judge asked hard questions, the plea agreement blew up, and to think that the very guy who wrote the plea agreement is seriously gonna continue to investigate the Bidens is laughable,” he added. “The guy that wrote the plea agreement did it in a fashion to give Hunter Biden the biggest break maybe in American legal history. Does anybody in their right mind trust the Weiss team to continue to fairly and impartially investigate the Hunter Biden, Joe Biden matter?”
“I don’t. So you change the title, but the problem’s still the same,” he said.
Asked for his take on the “political implications” for President Biden’s reelection campaign, the Trump ally didn’t hold back.
“This is like the dumbest, dumber-than-dirt political move,” he said.
“On a Friday afternoon, and anything bad you want to talk about on Friday afternoon, they make a four-minute announcement. We’re going to turn Weiss into special counsel to remove any and all doubt. Andy’s right,” he added, referring to earlier remarks by former assistant U.S. attorney Andy McCarthy. “There is no ongoing investigation of Hunter Biden or Joe Biden.”
“Why would you accept a plea to half the case if you continue to investigate the guy for other crimes? Nobody ever does that. The only reason we’re talking about this is the plea deal blew up because of a good judge,” Graham stated. “In that plea agreement, they were going to wipe out all the financial transactions as a potentially criminal if he did the diversion agreement on the gun. There’s never been a deal like this in the history of America.”
“So the judge blew up the deal. And Weiss, according to the whistleblower, has had pressure on him from day one to short-circuit this investigation. So when I hear the attorney general tell me today, I’m going to make Weiss special counsel that creates more problems and than answers that it gives,” he said.
“Appointing Weiss special counsel doesn’t solve any of the problems exposed in this case. Whistleblowers have told Congress time and time again that the Justice Department had its thumb on the scale when it came to the Hunter Biden investigation,” the senator said in his statement. “The only solution for this problem is to have a new set of eyes on all things Hunter Biden.”
